Castleknock College achieved their first Green flag for Waste and Litter management last year. They have embarked on year one of the journey to attain flag 2 this year - water management. They became aware of the huge usage of plastic bottles and the volume of bottles being generated - Lucozade, Powerade, water etc. Multiple methods were found to reuse the plastic bottles - everything from lamp making, mosaics, sculptures, plant pots to pencil holders! This year they embarked on a project to use plastic bottles to create a green house!
Mr Cullen, the woodwork teacher with TY students, designed, made and painted a wooden structure that subsequently was fitted with small and large plastic bottles. Castleknock Tidy Towns supported them with bottle collecting! The greenhouse is now almost complete.
The great news is that the project has been short listed for Young Social Innovators competition national finals. Wishing them the very best of luck on Tuesday, 2nd May 2023 in Croke Park, Dublin at the Young Social Innovators of the Year Awards 2023.
